AML Officer

The Role

As an AML Officer, you will be reporting directly to the Bank’s MLRO. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with AML policies and procedures within the Bank. Your responsibilities will include drafting and updating AML procedures, conducting risk assessments, implementing controls, and providing guidance to junior staff members. You will also work together with various departments to develop and maintain effective AML strategies to maintain the organization's reputation. 

Key Responsibilities

As an AML Officer, you will be responsible for:

  • Responding to AML inquiries from regulators, law enforcement agencies and other competent authorities. 
  • Investigate transaction monitoring alerts and escalate suspicious transactions to the MLRO for further review.
  • Manage receipt and review of garnishee orders, verify against the customer database, and document all findings. 
  • Provide advice and support to staff on AML-related matters, escalating to the MLRO when necessary.
  • Assist the first line of defense with conducting comprehensive risk assessments for high-risk customers to identify potential money laundering, terrorist financing, and other illicit financial activities.
  • Escalate any positive PEP hits to the Head of Operations, and MLRO for approval. 
  • Assist the MLRO with developing and maintaining AML policies, procedures, and controls in accordance with the PMLA, PMLFTR and FIAU’s Implementing Procedures. 
  • Assist the MLRO with the preparation and submission of reports to regulatory authorities and senior management on AML compliance activities, findings, and recommendations. 
  • Assist the MLRO in providing training to employees on AML policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage Quality Assurance exercises to ensure the Bank’s compliance with AML/CFT regulations. 
  • Keep abreast of changes in AML regulations and guidelines, ensuring the Bank remains compliant and proactive in addressing emerging risks. 
  • Foster a culture of compliance throughout the Bank by promoting awareness and understanding of AML obligations.
  • Perform ad hoc duties and responsibilities as required.

Skills and Capabilities Required

  • Minimum 2 years’ in AML or a related field. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Banking, Finance, Law, Criminology or equivalent.
  • Relevant industry certifications, e.g. CAMS is a plus.
  • Positive, enthusiastic and a flexible team player. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including fluency in English and Maltese. 
  • Be reliable, organised, meticulous and prepared to work under pressure. 
  • Proactive and result driven.
  • Possess strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. 
  • IT literate.
